"Connected, but Alone"- Sherry Turkle
Technology has made our lives so much easier, yet has ruined us. We constantly need to be on our phones, whether we are checking a text or email or just scrolling through social media to see what our friends are doing. Instead of calling a loved one we choose to type up a short little text to update them. We just aren't all that close to people anymore. As Sherry Turkle said "we expect more from technology than from people." Even when we are with our friends we are constantly on our phones and don't really interact face to face.
We are more into the conversation than the connection. We much rather have a meaningless conversation with someone just to occupy or time and help us escape the real world for a few minutes. Through texting it is very hard to get to know anyone personally. This is because we can edit our texts to make us seem like the person we want to be instead of the person we actually are.
The advancement of technology has given us the opportunity to interact with robots. To me this is extremely sad since there are over 7.6 billion people out there in the world and we choose to talk to robots instead. People now a days are more likely to use technology to communicate for the sole fact they won't be judged. A device can be programmed to say whatever makes you happy, almost like a best friend. Turkle mentioned that Siri could become a best friend.

I couldn't agree more with your comments on Turkle's "Ted" discussion. The increased proliferation of technology in almost every aspect of our everyday lives gradually eliminates so many of the traditional interpersonal communication skills that we were taught as children, and that older generations live and die by. Due to these changes, even true connections with those closest to you such as family members can be perceived as not genuine, as so much of the communication being made isn't face to face, but device to device.
ReplyDeleteI agree 100% with your post. This generation is constantly on our phones and always checking up on social media. I think that the advancement of technology is getting kind of scary and we need to step back and remember what it was like back in the day before we had every form of technology at our fingertips.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that we need to slow down our use of technology. Kids now a days barely play outside and experience anything other than whats on the computer screen. I think we should just go back to no cell phones and just home phones if that.
