BIRG and CORF
BIRG stands for Basking In Reflected Glory. With saying that most sports fans have a feeling of belonging and feel a part of a team. For example, many sports fans wear apparel with their team on it if that team is doing well. Or the talk about their team very highly. On the other hand many fans face CORF. CORF stands for Cutting Of Reflected Failure. That means if some fan's team isn't doing so hot then they might not wear that teams logo for a while or they won't associate themselves with that team. Many fans tend to blame the team's failure of the refs, the weather, and even the other teams. But never in a million years would a true fan think their team is the reason they failed. Fans also tend to talk very negatively about other teams in that league. For example, a Cubs fan would talk down about the Red Sox or the Cardinals just to make their team look better.
On the Colbert show, he mentions the Jacksonville Jaguars. The team has lost most of their games in the season and no fans came to watch. So the stadium removed seats to put in pools to draw people to come watch the games. The owner wanted to be creative with the underperforming seats even though the team sucks. In the new pools, the people who are lucky enough to sit their are able to have unlimited drinks and food. Another amazing feature is that the people can track their fantasy teams or even other teams in the league. This whole situation is a mixture of both BIRF and CORF. Fans can bask in the glory of better teams in a pool while watching a bad team get destroyed.
