empowering women

Image
In the ad above I believe that Jean Kilbourne would still be upset about it.  She is obviously photoshopped and the hair is not natural.  It is empowering that women can now think that they don't have to shave head to toe to impress anyone, but themselves.  The ad also shows that since all hair is beautiful you should embrace your natural side.  This ads still seems as if the model is portrayed as sexual.   In the ad below it shows equality.  For once a woman isn't naked! Jean Kilbourne would be proud.  This ad finally shows women that they can show off more than just their bodies.  This ad lets men know that women are more than just an object which Jean Kilbourne pointed out quite a bit in her documentary "Killing us Softly".

Romantic Couples

Ross and Rachel from the show "Friends" went to high school together and wasn't until they were much older did they end up falling in love.  Rachel moved to New York and moved in with Monica (Ross's sister) and thats how they became best friends and later on lovers.  Chuck Kolsterman says love is only fake because you are never be fully satisfied with what you have.  There is always something better as portrayed on television.  Ross and Rachel are the perfect example of fake love.  They fight and bicker all the time and they break up they always find someone that better suits their needs at the time.  Ross is a good example of the message of perfection for the reading "The Rise of the Lavish Wedding".  Ross got married a few times before he drunkenly married Rachel.  All his weddings before were full of luxury items.  The best of the best.  The message of perfection here is that no matter what the wedding needs to be perfect.  Well ...

Brand Identity

Brand Identity is how a company wants to presents themselves to certain consumers.  One store that I like to shop at is Nike.  Nike is an universal company.  They have stuff for almost everyone.  They offer sport wear and casual wear.  Their ads mostly involve athletes and their performances.  Nike wants to present themselves as the best of the best.  One store that I avoid at all costs would have to be Ann Taylor.  Ann Taylor targets the older and more of the business crowd of women.  This store is full of pastel and boring colors.

Duke Porn Star

In the first video we watched the Young Turks talked about the duke student being bullied for doing porn to help pay for her college expenses.  They went on and on about how it was her fault all her information got out, since she was the one that told a frat boy.  They slut shamed her.   They had nothing positive to say about the student or the porn industry.  One of the hosts said that the student was just young and naive. While in another video we watched from The View, they were more concerned about the student herself.  They brought in "Bell Knox" and talked to her about her job choice.  She says she feels comfortable and loves her job.  She has all the control she needs to feel safe and nothing ever goes too far.

Bieber's Bulge

In the first video we watched in class, they discussed that he looked fine in both the original and photoshopped.  The real issue in this video was that ads everywhere are photoshopped and you can't escape that. Also mentioned is that if you come out and say a photo of you isn't photoshopped when it obviously was then that makes you sound ridiculous.  The hosts then said that Bieber would have gotten more respect if he just said that he loved his body and didn't know what to do with the picture afterwards, but instead his agent decided to fight against it making biebs look worse. In the second video we watched in class the host discussed the how Berber looked more like the average 20 year old should, but his legal teams said that Justin is in fact jacked.  The real issue discussed is the body image aspect of photo shop.  To be a real man in todays society you must be larger literally everywhere.  And if you don't look like that then you're considered weak. ...

Cultivation Theory

Cultivation theory mainly deals with the long term effects television has on us.  What we see on television greatly influences how we see the world.  People now a days seem to live in fear all because of what they watch on tv.  Many people view torture as a way to elevate problems.  As seen in most police or crime shows, the investigator will torture the suspected criminal for the answers he or she wants.  The longer it takes for the criminal to speak the more torture methods are used.  With saying that most people believe what they see on the television. If it works in a show the people will believe it works in real life because well everything seen on tv has to be true!

BIRG and CORF

BIRG stands for Basking In Reflected Glory.  With saying that most sports fans have a feeling of belonging and feel a part of a team.  For example, many sports fans wear apparel with their team on it if that team is doing well.  Or the talk about their team very highly.  On the other hand many fans face CORF.  CORF stands for Cutting Of Reflected Failure.  That means if some fan's team isn't doing so hot then they might not wear that teams logo for a while or they won't associate themselves with that team.  Many fans tend to blame the team's failure of the refs, the weather, and even the other teams.  But never in a million years would a true fan think their team is the reason they failed.  Fans also tend to talk very negatively about other teams in that league.  For example, a Cubs fan would talk down about the Red Sox or the Cardinals just to make their team look better. On the Colbert show, he mentions the Jacksonville Jaguars. ...
